Accessibility statement

This statement applies to the Bower website at bower.tv. Bower is a website for keeping track of the TV shows, films and sports you follow, and we want everyone to be able to use it, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use. This page says how far we have got, what we know is still wrong, and how to tell us about anything we have missed.

The short version

  • Our target is WCAG 2.2 level AA, the standard the European Accessibility Act points to.
  • Bower is partially conformant: most of the site meets the standard, and the things that do not are listed below, each with a reference number.
  • We test with an automated checker over every kind of page, in light and dark mode and on a phone-sized screen, and by hand with a keyboard. A screen-reader review is the next step.
  • The trailer player, the checkout, the bot check and social sign-in come from other companies and we cannot fix their parts ourselves.

1. What we are aiming for

Bower aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That is the level the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) requires of e-commerce services, transposed in Ireland by the European Union (Accessibility Requirements of Products and Services) Regulations 2023 (S.I. No. 636/2023), and the harmonised standard EN 301 549 is built on it.

The site is built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA, and is designed for phones first. It should work with the current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, with the page zoomed to 200%, and with the operating system's dark mode and reduced-motion settings.

2. How far we have got

Bower is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the site do not yet fully meet the standard. The problems we know about are listed here, as found on the date at the top of this page. Each carries the reference number we track it under; quoting it when you write to us helps.

Not yet assessed: pages that need an account (settings, the profile, the Plus checkout, public profiles), the emails we send, and how the site sounds in a screen reader. We will extend this statement as each is reviewed.

3. Content we do not control

Some parts of Bower are provided by other companies inside the page. We choose them, but we cannot change how they are built, so this statement does not cover them and we cannot promise they meet the standard.

  • Trailers play in YouTube's own player. Captions, audio descriptions and the player's controls are YouTube's; a trailer has captions only if its uploader added them.
  • Paying for Bower Plus happens in a checkout window provided by Paddle, our payment provider and merchant of record.
  • The bot check on the feedback form is Cloudflare Turnstile, which offers its own accessible fallback when it cannot verify a visitor silently.
  • Signing in with Google, Facebook or Apple goes through those services' own sign-in pages, reached via Amazon Cognito.

4. How we test

We assess Bower ourselves. The first full review ran on 14 September 2026 and the date at the top of this page is the most recent re-run. Each review covers one page of every kind Bower has (the home page, Latest, the calendar, the TV and film browse pages, a show, a film, the sport pages, search, the account pages, the feedback form and this site's policy pages) and consists of:

  • an automated check with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 level AA, on a desktop screen in light and dark mode and on a phone-sized screen;
  • scripted keyboard checks: that every page has a skip link and a main landmark, how many Tab presses the header costs, and that the region picker, the search results, the hide confirmation and the sign-in dialog can be reached and closed from the keyboard;
  • a 320 pixel wide layout check for horizontal scrolling, and a check that animation stops under the reduced-motion setting.

The review is a script we re-run after changes, so the "last reviewed" date is the date it last ran, not an estimate. A session with a screen reader (VoiceOver) is planned once the problems listed above are fixed.

We aim to reply within ten working days, and if you ask for something in another format we will do our best to provide it.

6. If you are not satisfied

In Ireland the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is the compliance authority for e-commerce services under the European Accessibility Act. If you have contacted us and are not happy with the answer, you can raise it with the CCPC at ccpc.ie. If you are in another EU member state, your own national authority for the Accessibility Act is the place to go.
